Frozen is a 2013 computer-animated musical fantasy film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Pictures. "The Snow Queen," written by Hans Christian Andersen, is the inspiration for this Disney animated feature film. A princess sets out on an adventure with an Iceman, his reindeer, and a snowman in order to locate her estranged sister, whose icy powers have trapped their kingdom in perpetual winter.

Before being made into a screenplay in 2011 by Jennifer Lee, who co-directed with Chris Buck, Frozen underwent several story treatments. The voices of Kristen Bell, Idina Menzel, Jonathan Groff, Josh Gad, and Santino Fontana are featured in the film. Christophe Beck was hired to compose the film's orchestral score, and Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez wrote the songs.

On November 27, 2013, Frozen had its general theatrical release in the United States. The visuals, screenplay, themes, music, and voice acting were all praised; some film critics even considered Frozen to be Disney's best animated film since the studio's renaissance era. Frozen was recognized at the 86th Academy Awards with two nominations (two victories), including Best Animated Picture.

The film was a major commercial success, earning $1.280 billion in worldwide box office income, surpassing Toy Story 3 to become the highest-grossing animated film of all time, and holding on to its position until it was surpassed by The Lion King in 2019. It also became the fifth top-grossing movie of all time and the most successful film of 2013.

In January 2015, the motion picture became the most sold Blu-ray Disc in the United States, spawning a franchise that includes an animated short in 2015 and an animated featurette in 2017.

The Snow Queen is a fairy tale that inspired Frozen. Both deal with a snow queen, troll, reindeer, frozen hearts, and snow monsters. The source material is, however, on the other hand, a much grimmer narrative with a demon, an unfortunate magic mirror, and thieves.
