Genshin Impact is a role-playing game from Chinese developer miHoYo that was first released in 2020. The game features an anime-style open world, and an action-based fighting system made up of elemental magic and character switching. Gacha mechanics are used to monetize the game, with players able to get new characters, weapons, and other resources by spending real money.

The Genshin Impact takes place in the fantasy world of Teyvat, which is home to seven distinct nations ruled by a different god each. The Traveler is an ancient figure who has traveled across numerous dimensions with their twin brother before being separated in Teyvat. The sibling Traveler travels across the land in search of their lost sibling, accompanied by Paimon, and becomes involved in Teyvat's foreign problems.

The game uses an open-world environment, and players are able to explore the world at their leisure. The player can also visit various towns, villages, and other locations in order to take on quests from the locals or purchase items. Teyvat is a large continent with many different regions, including forests, deserts, tundras, and more.

Following Genshin's release in September 2020, development began. In September 2020, the game was released for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4, Android, and iOS; a PlayStation 5 was released in April 2021 and is planned for future distribution on Nintendo Switch. The game received largely positive reviews from critics with regard to the combat mechanics and open-world immersion, while others criticized its easy ending and monetization model. The game became a commercial success, grossing more than $3 billion in its first year of availability, the greatest first-year launch revenue of any video game.
