The Pokémon franchise, which began in 1996 as a video game and anime series produced by The Pokémon Company, is owned by The Pokémon Company, a subsidiary of Nintendo. Satoshi Tajiri created the brand while studying at the Nagoya Institute of Technology in Japan. It focuses on fictitious creatures called "Pokémon," which are comprised of humans and animals. In the world of Pokémon, people known as "Pokémon Trainers" capture and battle other creatures for fun. All media products connected to the franchise take place in the Pokémon universe. The franchise's motto is "You Gotta Catch ‘Em All!" There are currently 908 distinct species within the universe of Pokémon.

The first Pokemon Ash ever caught was a Caterpie. He later released it when it evolved into a Butterfree so that it could mate. However, he did keep the Metapod shell. Caterpie is also the first Bug-type Pokemon that Ash catches. Fun fact: In the original Japanese version, Satoshi (Ash) actually catches a Pidgey instead of a Caterpie. This was changed in the dub because it was thought that kids wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a Pidgey and a Caterpie. Satoshi does end up catching a Pidgey later on in the series, though.
