The Cast

Joyce Byers

Winona Ryder played Joyce Byers, the mother of Will and Jonathan Byers, who is divorced from Lonnie Byers, the father of her two children. Joyce worked as a retail clerk at Melvald's General Store in downtown Hawkins and was born and raised in Hawkins. She went to high school with future police chief Jim Hopper and her Season 2 love interest Bob Newby (who is later tragically killed by a Demogorgon).

Joyce does not want to enter into another relationship, even if she has feelings for Hopper. In Season Three, she is looking to sell her house and depart Hawkins, much to Hopper's dismay. While researching the reason behind the magnets falling off her fridge (to the point that she does not show up for a planned date), she and Hopper discover a Russian conspiracy.

Joyce shuts the Upside Down rift with a Russian machine, leaving Hopper "dead." After breaking into a Russian lab below the new Starcourt Mall, where the Russians have constructed another portal to the Upside Down, Joyce is compelled to close it by shutting off the Russian machine that opened it with Hopper in the room, and Hopper becomes "killed." Following Hopper's death three months later, Joyce became a mother figure to Eleven. The Byers family and Eleven move out of Hawkins three months after Hopper's demise.

Jim Hopper

James "Jim" Hopper (portrayed by David Harbour) is the Hawkins police chief. Hopper has spent his entire life in Hawkins, having gone to high school with Joyce and Bob. Hopper divorced after his young daughter Sarah died of cancer, which caused him to become an alcoholic. He eventually matures into a more responsible person, rescuing Will from the Demogorgon and adopting Eleven as his adoptive daughter.

In Season 3, he tries to break up El and Mike since their relationship is moving too quickly for him while also attempting to woo Joyce romantically. He investigates the supernatural once again, which leads them to unearth a Russian conspiracy. He is seemingly killed by a Russian machine that opens a wormhole to the Upside Down. He appears alive in Russia in a trailer for Season 4.

Mike Wheeler

Mike "Mike" Wheeler (portrayed by Finn Wolfhard) is the son of Karen and Ted, younger brother of Nancy, and older brother of Holly. Lucas Sinclair, Dustin Henderson, and his closest friend Will Byers are all individuals he is in touch with. Mike is a bright and conscientious student who puts his friends first. Mike is their paladin in their Dungeons & Dragons game; he generally takes on the role of Dungeon Master. He appears to be developing feelings for Eleven (or El, as Mike and his pals, refer to her). However, he lashes out at her frequently and leaves her out.

In Season Two, he begins to spend more time with Will Byers, and the two appear to be forming a closer relationship. He is the first person Will tells his strange flashbacks to the Upside Down about, and he accompanies him, Joyce, and Bob to the lab as Will's health deteriorates.

When Eleven returns, he is pleased because they don't have to fight the war without her but angry at Hopper for hiding her for a year. The two of them attend the Snow Ball together one month later and share a kiss. The pair are dating again in the following summer, but Hopper can keep them apart since they spent too much time together and had an unhealthy and obsessive connection.

Max tells Eleven that she does not need him, and he goes on to explain how Mike had wronged her. When Max informs her that she doesn't need him and continues to talk about how Mike has deceived her, the two split up with each other. Will said that he loved Eleven and projected his emotions toward her but had trouble finding the right words. On the day when the Byers family moves away, Will tells Mike he can't join a new party. Mike promises to keep in touch with her and sets up visits at Thanksgiving and Christmas. Before departing Hawkins with the Byers family, Eleven says goodbye to Will, telling him she loves him before kissing him.

Eleven

In the first episode, Eleven (portrayed by Millie Bobby Brown) was born as Jane Ives, daughter of Terry Ives, and grew up in Hawkins Lab, where scientists experimented on her until the beginning of season one. She escaped the laboratory and struck up a friendship with Mike, Will, Dustin, and Lucas. Eleven has telekinetic and telepathic abilities that allow her to control things with her mind. She is the mage in Jim's Dungeons & Dragons party. At the conclusion of season two, Hopper became a father figure to Eleven while looking for her biological mother, culminating in her adoption at the end of the season as Jane Hopper.

In season three, she is dating Mike and is pursued by the Mind Flayer, released by the Russians, who opens a doorway to the Upside Down. She reads Hopper's prepared address to manage things between El and Mike, but he never actually spoke with them about it. At the conclusion of season three, she tells Mike that she loves him. Joyce takes in Eleven after Hopper "dies," and El leaves Hawkins with the Byers family.

Dustin Henderson

Dustin Henderson (portrayed by Gaten Matarazzo), a pal of Mike, Will, and Lucas, is a brilliant and studious youngster with cleidocranial dysplasia, causing him to lisp. Dustin is the bard in their Dungeons & Dragons group and has perhaps the complete understanding of the game, particularly the monsters. He has a crush on Nancy Wheeler while both he and Lucas have feelings for Max in season two, but Lucas and Max ultimately hook up.

In the second season, he befriends Steve Harrington, who advises him on how to get girlfriends. Dustin spends a month at a science camp in Season Three and, according to Steve's instructions, is able to acquire a girlfriend named Suzie, who he claims is "cleverer than Phoebe Cates" and "sexyter." Dustin's pals doubt her existence because he can't contact her over his makeshift radio tower.

Instead of his pals, though, as a result of their doubt over Suzie, Dustin discovers the encrypted Russian transmission and goes to Steve with the information. He subsequently establishes Suzie's reality when he seeks her out for Planck's constant.

Lucas Sinclair

Lucas Charles Sinclair (portrayed by Caleb McLaughlin) is a friend of Mike, Will, and Dustin and an older brother to Erica. Lucas is initially guarded towards Eleven, but he warms up to her later on. He becomes a love interest for Max in Season Two. Lucas plays the ranger in their Dungeons and Dragons session.

He has a very good understanding of using a slingshot, which the party refers to as "The Wrist Rocket," and is exceptionally skilled at it; in earlier seasons, the slingshot was used for comedic effect as a last-ditch effort, but in Season 3, it is utilized to repel the danger.

Nancy Wheeler

Nancy Wheeler (portrayed by Natalia Dyer) is the teenage daughter of Karen and Ted, older sister of Mike and Holly Wheeler, and older half-sister of Jonathan Byers. Nancy was something of an outcast at school until popular student Steve Harrington took an interest in her. Their relationship comes to an end when Nancy starts dating Jonathan Byers after Murray Bauman's assistance. Despite a lack of training or practice, she is very competent with firearms.

She's been seen using pistols, revolvers, rifles, and shotguns. Nancy and Jonathan work as interns at the Hawkins Post in the third season, where they are subjected to sexist treatment from their male bosses. She and Jonathan are ultimately dismissed for pursuing a story against their editor's wishes, but Nancy continues to investigate the case, which leads her to have several encounters with the Flayed being controlled by the Mind Flayer from the Upside Down.

Jonathan Byers

Charlie Heaton plays the 12-year-old version of Ben Wheeler, who is 13 in Season 6. He is an introverted individual at school who is the older sibling of Will Byers and the son of Joyce Byers. He's a photographer by hobby and very close with his mother and brother. After Season 2, he starts dating Nancy. They both work as interns at the Hawkins Post in Season 3 but are eventually dismissed by their editor because they make too many mistakes. He fights evil forces from the Upside Down before him and his family decide to depart Hawkins County.

Karen Wheeler

Karen Wheeler (portrayed by Cara Buono) is the mother of Nancy, Mike, baby Holly, and wife of Ted. She is a devoted mother who remains mainly in the dark about her children's activities. After the second season and the beginning of the third, she begins to develop a sexual attraction towards Billy Hargrove due to boredom with her family life but ultimately decides against acting on these feelings. She encourages Nancy to continue working on her story against her editor's wishes.

Martin Brenner

Dr. Brenner (portrayed by Matthew Modine) is the head scientist at Hawkins Laboratory and the studies conducted there. He is a heartless and manipulative researcher, having kidnapped Eleven from her mother and subjected her to electroshock treatment to destroy her mind. After this, he put Eleven through several experiments (project INDIGO) before she escaped after forming a connection to the Upside Down using her abilities.

He and his team search for her throughout Hawkins, unaware that they have unleashed the Demogorgon. Ray, a former employee of Brenner's, claims in Season 2 that he attempted to bargain for his life with Eleven and Kali (Eight) after being informed that the Demogorgon killed Brenner.

Will Byers

Main article: Will Byers

Noah Schnapp portrays Will Byers, the younger brother of Jonathan Byers and the son of Joyce Byers. Will is known as "Will the Wise" in the group's Dungeons and Dragons game. Will is a quiet, kind, and often frightened youngster. In November 1983, he goes missing near "Mirkwood," after confronting the monster that emerged through a rift to the "Upside Down," an unknown dimension discovered by Hawkins Lab scientists.

In the second season, Schnapp was promoted to series regular. In season two, he was possessed by the Mind Flayer from the Upside Down until his mother, brother, and Nancy Wheeler succeeded in freeing him. In season three, Will's friends' preoccupation with their girlfriends makes him feel like a fish out of water. His connection to the Mind Flayer aids the group in detecting when the Flayer is active. He moves out of Hawkins with his mother and brother after the season.

Max Mayfield

Maxine "Max" Mayfield (portrayed by Sadie Sink) is Billy's younger stepsister, an active skateboarder, and the tomboy of the group who catches Lucas' attention when it is revealed that she has the highest score in Dig Dug. She never played Dungeons & Dragons, but she refers to herself as the "zoomer" of the party, despite Mike's claims that the term is made-up. The "zoomer," she says, is responsible for moving from location to location within a group.

While she is mastering the art of driving a vehicle in the second season, she tells Mike, "Zoomer." Max dislikes her step-brother Billy Hargrove for his egotistical and boastful conduct. She and Lucas are dating in season three. Eleven seeks advice from Max when she thinks Mike is lying to her, and Max convinces her that Mike may have done so to play along with his pals. Eleven assists Max in exploring the outside world, resulting in them becoming friends. She also appears to be a Wonder Woman enthusiast.

Steve Harrington

Steve "The Hair" Harrington (portrayed by Joe Keery) is a popular student at the high school. He self-identifies as having wonderful hair and a good parenting style, and his pals agree. He tries to connect with Nancy Wheeler and ostracize Jonathan Byers at first, but he later regrets doing so.

Beginning with the second season, Keery was upgraded to regular status after appearing in the first. After doing so, Steve became an important character who formed a brother-like connection with Dustin (while giving him terrible relationship guidance) and assumed the "mom" role for the leading group of kids owing to his protective behavior and iconic 'hands-on-hips mother pose.

What the friends call "the bat" is a baseball bat with multiple large nails driven into its head, made by Jonathan to combat the Demogorgon. While it proved ineffective against the Demogorgon, it was able to kill some Demo-Dogs. He works at Starcourt Mall at Scoops Ahoy in season three. He interacts with former classmate Robin Buckley, whom he soon develops romantic feelings for but is rejected after confessing her sexuality.

In this episode, Steve, Dustin, and Erica discover a secret Russian facility beneath Starcourt Mall and are subsequently imprisoned by the Russians. After learning that another party is stranded at Starcourt Mall, he and Robin go there in hopes of rescuing them from a Flayed Billy. He later takes the "Scoops Troop" (Dustin, Erica, Robin, and himself) to where Dustin erected a radio tower he dubbed "Cerebro" in order to contact his girlfriend, Suzie. 3 months later, he applies for work at the local video store with the intention of attracting women with his “chick magnet” status.

Billy Hargrove

Billy Hargrove (portrayed by Dacre Montgomery) was careless, impulsive, and verbally abusive to his stepsister Max due to the physical abuse he endures at home. He is frequently slept with because he is promiscuous. In season 3, he becomes an unwilling agent in the Mind Flayer's plans.

Backstory: According to flashbacks, Billy had a loving and close relationship with his mother, but she left when he was young due to his father's abuse, which explains his comfort around older ladies. Later, Eleven reminds Billy of his mother, allowing him to break free from the Mind Flayer's control and sacrifice himself for Eleven's safety. As he died, he expressed heartfelt remorse to Max for all of his sins.

Bob Newby

In Season 2, he becomes Joyce's boyfriend and is at odds with Hopper because of this. He volunteered to reset the breakers and unlock the doors after all of them were trapped in Hawkins Lab due to a power outage, but was attacked, killed, and eaten by Demo-Dogs in front of Joyce.

Sam Owens

Dr. Sam Owens (portrayed by Paul Reiser) is a Department of Energy official who takes over for Brenner at Hawkins Laboratory. Owens, like his predecessor, is as committed to scientific research as he is dedicated to the people of Hawkins Lab. Will's residual traumatic experiences from Upside Down are being investigated and treated by Dr. Sam Owens.

Bob was the first person to discover the existence of the Upside Down. He quits his position at Hawkins Lab at the conclusion of Season 2 after being attacked by monsters from the Upside Down. In Season 3, Hopper attempts to contact him, but he only appears briefly in the season 3 finale, where he discovers an abandoned Russian lab that was used to create the gate to the Upside Down and tries to assist them. He gives Hopper a birth certificate for Eleven naming her Hopper's adopted daughter.

Robin Buckley

Maya Hawke plays Robin Buckley, an "alternative" girl who works at Scoops Ahoy, the Starcourt Mall ice cream shop, and is introduced in the third season. Robin is sardonic and bored with her employment and makes fun of Steve for his inability to chat with women, but she is able to decode the Russian radio message and discovers the camp along with him, Dustin, and Erica.

Robin is also fluent in four languages, including English, Spanish, French, and Italian. She can also conversate in Pig Latin. Robin has been in a band for twelve years and is part of the Scoops Troop. When she was first introduced as being obsessed with Steve in high school, it was revealed that she really wanted someone-of-Steve's-many fans' attention instead, implying that she is a lesbian.

Erica Sinclair

Lucas' 10-year-old sister is Erica Sinclair (portrayed by Priah Ferguson). In the second season, she was introduced as a recurring character and upgraded to series regular status in the third. She aids Dustin, Steve, and Robin break into the Russian base beneath Starcourt Mall by providing them with information on how to get inside.

Dustin encourages Erica to see herself as a geek and embrace it in the wake of these occurrences. She receives Will's Dungeons & Dragons manuals at the end of the third season. She is snarky, profane, sassy, and sees her older brother and his pals as dorks. She is also intelligent, brave, and decent in nature.

Murray Bauman

Brett Gelman plays Mr. Bauman, a private investigator and conspiracy theorist hired to look into the disappearance of Barbara Holland in season 2. He first appeared in season 2, assisting Nancy and Jonathan to shut down Hawkins National Laboratory. In Season 3, he aids Joyce and Hopper by assisting them on their mission to infiltrate Starcourt Mall's secret underground facility, where the Russians had been developing a machine capable of opening a portal to the Upside Down. He is also shown to be conversant in Russian.
