Akira Toriyama founded the Dragon Ball franchise in 1984. In that year, Toriyama began serializing his manga in Weekly Shōnen Jump, which continued until 1995 and was published by Shueisha. The Journey to the West literary classic and Hong Kong martial arts movies were source material for Dragon Ball's conception.

Dragon Ball is a Japanese anime series that chronicles the adventures of Son Goku from childhood to adulthood, as he trains in martial arts. He lives alone until he meets a young girl called Bulma, who encourages him to join her on a journey to collect the seven orbs known as Dragon Balls, which may be used to grant wishes if gathered in groups of seven. Along his journey, Goku establishes new friendships and becomes married; he learns about his extraterrestrial origins and fights a variety of evildoers, many of whom are seeking after the Dragon Balls.

Toriyama's manga was adapted and divided into two anime series produced by Toei Animation: Dragon Ball (1986–1996) and Dragon Ball Z (1989–1997). Furthermore, the studio has produced 20 animated feature films, three television specials, and two anime sequel series titled Dragon Ball GT (1996–1997) and Dragon Ball Super (2015–2018).

From 2009 to 2015, a revised version of Dragon Ball Z aired in Japan as Dragon Ball Kai, which was a recut that followed the manga's narrative more faithfully by eliminating much of the content featured solely in the anime. Several companies have developed numerous types of merchandising based on the series, resulting in a large media franchise that includes films, both animated and live-action, collectible trading card games, action figures, and various box sets.

Dragon Ball has become one of the most successful media franchises in history. Since its debut, Dragon Ball has risen to be one of the most popular manga and anime series ever, with the manga sold in over 40 countries and the anime aired in more than 80 nations. In Japan, 42 collected tankōbon volumes have been published and have sold over 160 million copies, making them the two bestselling manga series in history.

The artwork, characterization, and humor of the tale have been praised. It is widely regarded as one of the greatest and most influential manga series ever created, with many manga artists citing Dragon Ball as a source of inspiration for their own now successful works.
