SpongeBob SquarePants is an American animated comedy television series created by marine science educator and animator Stephen Hillenburg for Nickelodeon. The show follows the exploits of SpongeBob, his aquatic pals, and other characters in the fictitious seaside town of Bikini Bottom.

It is a media franchise because of its high popularity, which has made it a pop culture phenomenon. It is the highest-rated show on Nickelodeon and ViacomCBS Consumer Products' most profitable property with more than $13 billion in merchandise sales as of 2019.

The Intertidal Zone, an unfinished educational tome that Hillenburg wrote for his pupils in 1989 to teach them about undersea life, is largely credited for the creation of many of the series' concepts. In 1996, SpongeBob SquarePants was developed as a television series, and in 1997, a seven-minute pilot was presented to Nickelodeon.

The network's executives wanted SpongeBob to be a schoolboy, but Hillenburg preferred him to be an adult. He was willing to "walk out" of Nickelodeon and cancel the show, but he compromised by creating Mrs. Puff and her boating class so that SpongeBob could go to school as an adult.

After it debuted at the 1999 Kids' Choice Awards, Nickelodeon aired a preview for the series on May 1, 1999, in the United States. The series formally debuted on July 17, 1999. Since its premiere, it has received widespread acclaim and amassed a large following. The thirteenth season will premiere in October 2020.

Three feature films have been produced as a result of the franchise: The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie (2004), Sponge Out of Water (2015), and Sponge on the Run (2020). In 2021, two spin-offs, Kamp Koral: SpongeBob's Under Years and The Patrick Star Show, debuted. An untitled project based on Squidward Tentacles is being developed as of 2020. In May 2021, it was announced that an additional spin-off film would be released featuring Sandy Cheeks.
