The critically acclaimed online series RWBY (pronounced "Ruby") was created by Monty Oum for Rooster Teeth. It is set in the imagined world of Remnant, where young people train to become warriors (also known as "Huntsmen" and "Huntresses") to defend their planet from monsters known as Grimm. The name RWBY is derived from the four leading characters' surnames: Ruby, Weiss, Blake, and Yang, as well as their primary colors (red, white, black, and yellow).
The first episode was shown at the Rooster Teeth convention event RTX in July 2013 and then made available on their website a month later. Following several promotional trailers, each episode was made available approximately weekly, initially to Rooster Teeth members before being uploaded to YouTube a week later. The series went viral and necessitated the production of a second season, subtitled Volume 2, which was released in July 2014.
