Am I sedentary? According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the answer is probably yes. In fact, the CDC classifies most Americans as sedentary. That means we spend the vast majority of our time sitting down – at work, during our commute, while we watch TV or use the computer. The health risks associated with a sedentary lifestyle are well documented. They include obesity, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and even some forms of cancer.
If you are not sure whether you are sedentary or lightly active, take this quick quiz to find out. Do you:
- Sit at a desk all day?
- Get up and move around every few hours?
- Stand up and walk around regularly throughout the day?
- Take frequent breaks to move your body?
- Exercise for 30 minutes or more most days of the week?
You are considered sedentary if you answered mostly "yes" to the above questions.
