Continents and Oceans Quiz

The world is about 71% water and 29% land. How many continents and oceans are there in the world, do you know? This world map quiz is what you need if one point on the map and believe you would recognize a water body or continent. Give it a go to see whether you're as well-informed as you think!

The Earth is divided into seven continents and five seas. Asia is the most populous continent, while Oceania is the smallest. The Pacific Ocean is the world's largest ocean, with a surface area of around 261 million km² (or 220 million square miles). The Mariana Trench, located in the western Pacific Ocean, is the deepest known section of the planet's oceans at over seven kilometers deep. Its deepest point reaches down to a depth of 7 miles.

---

Eurasia

The world's largest landmass and the continent is Eurasia. The supercontinent has a surface of around 51 million kilometers squared. Except for the Indian and Arab subcontinents, which have their own tectonic plates, the majority of the continent "sits" on the Eurasian tectonic plate.

Asia and Europe are conventionally divided by the Caspian Sea, the Ural River, and the Urals (the Ural Mountains), which separate them from each other. The Ural mountain range stretches from the Arctic Ocean's coast south through Russia's western region.

---

Africa

Africa is the continent with the second-largest area, at 30.2 million km². Africa as we know it is only a portion of the African tectonic plate, which extends beneath multiple bodies of water around its landmass.

The continent is divided by custom into North(ern) Africa, West(ern) Africa, East(ern) Africa, Central Africa, and Southern Africa. 54 nations claim the continent as their own. There are 1,276 million Africans in the world.

---

The Americas

The continents of North and South America, as well as the islands of the Caribbean, are all part of the Americas. Continental masses on North and South America are geologically distinct.

---

North America

North America is the third-largest landmass on Earth, with a size of 24.2 million km². The 83 km (at the narrowest part) wide Bering Strait lies between it and mainland Asia (Russia's Far East). Eastern Russia, however, is technically considered to be part of the North American plate. There are three countries in North America: Canada, the United States, and Mexico, as well as Greenland, which is the world's largest island and geographically belongs to North America.

---

South America

Almost the entire continent of South America is located in the Southern Hemisphere. The west is bordered by the Humboldt Current of the Pacific Ocean, and the east by the Brazil Current of the South Atlantic Ocean. It is separated from Africa in the east and Antarctica in the south.

---

Australia

Australia is both a country and a continent, being the smallest in our list of the world's major continents. Australia has a landmass of 7.6 million km², which is substantially less than Europe's 10.2 million km². The Australian tectonic plate travels with New Guinea, an island off its coast.

---

Antarctica

Antarctica is the world's fifth-largest continent, with a total land area of 14.2 million km². The South Pole is the southernmost point on Earth's surface, located in the middle of this vast, cold, and hostile continent. The rotational pole of Earth lies at one of Antarctica's two endpoints. Antarctica has its own tectonic plate, known as the Antarctic plate.
