The Simpsons is an American animated sitcom created by Matt Groening for the Fox Broadcasting Company. The Simpson family, which consists of Homer, Marge, Bart, Lisa, and Maggie, is a satirical depiction of American life. Springfield is a made-up town that parodies American culture and society.

The dysfunctional family was dreamed up by Groening shortly before a request for a series of animated shorts with producer James L. Brooks. He invented a dysfunctional family and called the characters after his own relatives, substituting Bart for his own name; he thought Simpson sounded amusing because it rhymed with "simpleton."

The sketch debuted on The Tracey Ullman Show on April 19, 1987. It was converted into a half-hour prime time show for the 1989–1990 season, becoming Fox's first program to break into the Top 30 rankings in a season (1989–1990).

Since its premiere on December 17, 1989, 717 episodes of The Simpsons have aired. It's the longest-running American animated series, sitcom, and primetime television program in terms of seasons and episodes.

On July 27, 2007, The Simpsons Movie was released theatrically worldwide, becoming the highest-grossing comedy ever produced. As of 2018, a sequel is in development. Gracie Films and 20th Television collaborated on the series. A billion-dollar merchandise industry has developed around it. The Simpsons is a Gracie Films/20th TV production.

On March 3, 2021, the series was renewed for seasons 33 and 34, which were subsequently revealed to have 22 episodes each, bringing the episode total from 706 to 750. Its thirty-third season aired on September 26, 2021.
