A Japanese anime television series produced by Toei Animation and based on Super Sentai motifs, Sailor Moon originally premiered in Japan as Pretty Soldier Sailor Moon (Japanese: Bishōjo Senshi Sērā Mūn, Hepburn: Bishōjo Senshi Sērā Mūn) before being retitled to Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon. It is based on the manga of the same name written by Naoko Takeuchi, which was published from 1991 to 1997 in Nakayoshi.

The anime series Sailor Moon first aired on TV Asahi in Japan from March 7, 1992, to February 8, 1997, and has been dubbed into numerous foreign languages including English, Southeast Asia, Greater China, Australia, Europe, and Latin America.

The anime follows the adventures of Usagi Tsukino, a middle school student who is bestowed with the power to become the Pretty Soldier. She fights an array of evil foes as part of Sailor Soldiers while defending Earth. The anime also reflects Usagi's transition from a moody adolescent to a responsible young adult.

The anime's success in the United States prompted Tokyopop to release the manga that comprises its narrative. The popularity of Sailor Moon has resulted in a number of releases, including three movies, 39 video games, and numerous soundtracks based on this material. From July 2014 onwards, a second animated adaptation of Sailor Moon titled Sailor Moon Crystal began streaming worldwide online.
